Safety Tips for Walking and Biking to School
Choose Safe Routes
Map out your child's walking/biking route together. Before school starts, walk or bike the route together to get comfortable with it.
Teach your Child Safe Crossing Habits
Stop at the curb;look left, look right, then left again. Cross only at intersections, not between cars.
Make Eye Contact
Teach your child to make eye contact with drivers at the intersections so they know they are seen before crossing.
Practice Safe Biking
Make sure your child's bike fits. Both feet should be flat on the ground with 1-2 inches between the top bar and child's body. Bike helmets are a must!!
Walk with a Buddy
Kid ages 5-10 are learning independence, but they don't have the judgment to cope with traffic by themselves. Walk to school with your child or join a Walking School Bus.
